How can I rehydrate a dried opal

The opal in my sister's ring has dried out. I have found info that suggests both soaking and never soaking in water. I have also found info that suggest both soaking and never soaking in olive oil. Anyone?

Massage a high quality mineral oil into the stone. Once the luster is restored, you will want to re-oil it about once a month. The easiest way is to massage the oil in, let it sit overnight, then in the morning, wipe off excess oil and buff with a soft cloth. Good luck. c-ya
