I know Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminum and fluorine, and aquamarine is a variety of beryl. But besides their composites, what is the difference between them? What makes them different stones? I have a ring and I don't know if it is blue topaz or aquamarine and I would like to know... Beryl and topaz are two entirely different minerals. Beryl belongs to the hexagonal crystal system, topaz to the orthorhombic crystal system. What that means is that the way the elements bond together in each crystal is different. Emeralds are a variety of beryl. I could go into more detail, but that would probably bore you. The color comes from trace elements trapped in the mineral crystal lattice. The only difference between a sapphire and ruby is which trace element is trapped in between the crystal lattice of corundum. The only way to tell what you have in your ring is to take it to a jeweler who is also a licensed/registered mineralogist or gemologist.
